FROM GRAFFITI, TO ARCHITECTURE, TO GRAFFITI AND STREET ART, AGAIN:
CHRISTOPHER MACCLEMENTS PAINTS PURPOSE ONTO SOUTH AFRICA’S WALLS
Christopher MacClements, also known as Mac Clements (Son of Mercy), is a trained architect, self-taught graffiti artist, illustrator and large-scale muralist whose work brings together architecture, street art, storytelling and social purpose.
Born and raised in Pretoria, he was brought up by his grandparents. His grandfather was an architect, and the young Christopher followed in his footsteps, studying architecture at the University of Pretoria after attending Pretoria Boys High School.
But art had already become part of his life long before he entered an architectural studio.
MacClements began exploring graffiti and street art when he was approximately 15 years old, having already spent years sketching and developing his visual creativity. He did not receive formal art training; instead, he developed his craft independently, learning foundational creative skills from his grandfather and refining his work through years of practical experience.
After completing his architectural studies, he moved to Cape Town and worked professionally as an architect for five years. Then Covid-19 changed the course of his life.
Following two back-to-back retrenchments during the pandemic, MacClements made the courageous decision to leave architecture and pursue his lifelong passion for graffiti, murals, illustration and visual art as a full-time career.
What began during one of the most uncertain periods in recent history has since developed into a growing creative business.
Over the past six years, MacClements has worked professionally as an artist, completing commissioned murals and creative projects for companies, brands and private clients across South Africa. His large-scale work transforms ordinary walls and public spaces into bold visual landmarks that encourage people to stop, look and engage with the story being told.
WHERE ARCHITECTURE AND ART MEET
MacClements’ distinctive style is often described as a fusion of architecture, graffiti, street art and illustration.
His architectural background can be seen in his understanding of proportion, structure and the relationship between an artwork and the physical environment around it. His graffiti roots bring energy, freedom, colour and a direct connection with the public.
While he has already established himself as a sought-after muralist and visual artist, MacClements sees his creative journey continuing to evolve.
His future ambition is to move increasingly into sculptural art, combining his architectural knowledge with his artistic experience and allowing the two disciplines to meet in new, three-dimensional forms.
His story is ultimately one of resilience, reinvention and the courage to pursue a calling that had been present since childhood.
A Pretoria boy who began sketching and painting graffiti as a teenager has become a professional artist whose canvases now include entire buildings — and whose work is being used to tell stories that matter.
